Who Green Forest is.

Green Forest Cabinetry is based in Chesapeake, Virginia. We carry the line at the showroom on Route 22 in Patterson — come in and open the doors.

All-plywood construction.

Green Forest's pitch is all-plywood construction in a small number of well-chosen Shaker collections. Here is what is in the box, and what each one buys you.

Case
All-plywood, 1/2" real plywood throughout

Real wood interiors and exteriors on boxes and shelves. Why an all-plywood case matters: under a sink base, particle core swells at a cut edge the first time it takes on water, where plywood does not. Over the life of a kitchen, that is the difference between a box that holds up and one that does not.

Drawer box
Solid wood, dovetailed, 1/2" bottoms, soft close

Green Forest also describes it as a 5/8" solid wood hybrid dovetail with half-inch bottoms. Why a 1/2" drawer bottom matters: when the drawer is full of pans, a thin bottom flexes and eventually drops out of its groove. A half-inch bottom stays put.

Soft close
Standard on all doors and all drawers

You do not pay extra for it, and you do not have to pick which cabinets get it. Every door and every drawer closes softly.

Finish
Sherwin-Williams finish over MDF door centres

The door centres are MDF engineered to resist hairline joint fractures. This one is counter-intuitive and genuinely worth explaining: in a painted Shaker door, the joint where the rail meets the stile is where painted solid wood tends to crack as the wood moves with humidity. An MDF centre panel does not move the way solid wood does, so the painted finish stays clean at the joints. Most people assume solid wood is always better, and in a painted door it often is not.

The three collections.

Park Place

Classic Shaker, full overlay door

Finishes

White, Bianco, Speciale Grey, Midnight, Norfolk Blue, Sea Dance, Summit Grey Stain, Smoked Cashew Stain

The one to look at if you want the clean, current Shaker look — full overlay reads modern and the finish range is the widest of the three.

Bella

Classic Shaker, traditional overlay door

Finishes

Smoked Cashew, White, Bianco

The one to look at if you want a more classic read — traditional overlay leaves a visible band of frame between the doors and is more forgiving of a cabinet run that is not perfectly aligned.

Sierra

Transitional beaded Shaker

Finishes

White

The one to look at if you want a Shaker door with a little more detail — the bead adds a fine line of shadow that reads as transitional rather than plain.

Full overlay versus traditional overlay.

Park Place is full overlay and Bella is traditional overlay, and almost nobody explains the difference. Full overlay means the doors cover nearly all of the face frame, so you see mostly door and very little frame — it reads more current. Traditional overlay leaves a visible band of frame between the doors — it reads more classic and is more forgiving of a cabinet run that is not perfectly aligned, because the frame absorbs small differences.

Neither is better. Full overlay is the cleaner, more modern look; traditional overlay is the more classic, more forgiving one. Pick the one that suits the house and the room, not the one that sounds newer.

The beaded Shaker.

Sierra adds a bead detail to a Shaker door. A bead is a small, rounded groove run along the inside edge of the frame where it meets the panel. What it does to a kitchen is add a fine line of shadow and detail to an otherwise plain Shaker door, which reads as transitional rather than strictly modern or strictly traditional. It is a small thing that changes the whole feel of a run of cabinets.

Certifications.

  • KCMA Certified
  • NKBA Certified Member

In general terms, KCMA certification tests a cabinet against a published standard for how the box, doors, drawers and finishes hold up under use. NKBA is the National Kitchen & Bath Association; membership means the manufacturer is part of the industry trade body. These are Green Forest's certifications, not ours.

Samples and the full collection.

The full collection is on the showroom floor, and we can get you current samples. A brochure section will be added later if the manufacturer supplies the file.

See it in person.

Painted whites vary more between manufacturers than anyone expects — Green Forest's White, Bianco and the greys all read differently in a room than on a screen. The showroom is on Route 22 in Patterson, walk-ins welcome.
