Mahopac, and where we are.

Mahopac is a hamlet in the Town of Carmel, in Putnam County, built around Lake Mahopac. Our showroom is about fifteen road miles east, on Route 22 in Patterson at 3227 NY-22.

The lake, and what it did to the houses around it.

Lake Mahopac was a summer resort destination long before it was a year-round community, and a good deal of the housing closest to the water still reflects that. The houses were built for the season — small, open, with the lake as the point — and then extended, winterised and lived in year-round over the decades that followed.

The kitchen consequence is specific to Mahopac. In a lakeside house the kitchen was never the point, and it has been worked around ever since: pushed into a porch, squeezed into a corner, extended into what used to be a sunroom. The floors and ceilings rarely line up, the walls rarely run true, and the layout is whatever the house would allow at the time. These are real kitchens in real houses, but they are not the square, level rooms a catalogue assumes.

Further back from the water it is a different story. The ordinary year-round housing has none of those problems — straighter walls, level floors, and kitchens that were designed rather than worked around. Mahopac is both at once, which is why the honest advice depends on which side of the lake you live on.

What that means at the cabinet level.

Where a kitchen has been extended into a porch or a sunroom, the floors and ceilings rarely line up and the walls rarely run true. That is exactly the job for filler strips and scribe, and for a measurement taken in the room rather than worked out off a drawing. How far we are.

About fifteen road miles east on Route 22. Miles, not minutes — the road is the road. It is a real drive, and we will not pretend otherwise. But it is worth making once: to see the actual doors and the quartz samples side by side under one light, and to talk through your kitchen against the fronts you are considering. That is better than making the drive three times, and better than ordering off a screen.
