Kent and Lake Carmel, and where we are.

Kent is a town in Putnam County, and Lake Carmel is its largest community. Our showroom is about ten road miles east on Route 22, in Patterson at 3227 NY-22.

A summer colony turned year-round.

Lake Carmel was laid out as a summer colony and became year-round housing afterwards, which left an unusual pattern. There is a large number of small houses on small lots, many of them originally seasonal, and almost all of them extended at some point. The kitchens follow that history: tight, oddly shaped, and rarely the rooms a catalogue assumes.

That makes Lake Carmel one of the densest concentrations of converted-cottage kitchens in the whole service area. It is the single most relevant fact about working here. These are not badly built houses — they are houses built for summer and asked to do a different job now — and the kitchen is where that shows up first. A small kitchen where the wall leans and the ceiling drops an inch is a layout problem before it is a style problem, and that is the order it has to be solved in.

Small kitchens are a different discipline.

In a small kitchen the layout matters more than the door style, and every inch of filler is an inch of cabinet lost. So the decisions that matter are practical ones: deep drawers instead of doors below the counter, because they hold more and reach easier; a corner solution that actually opens up the dead corner rather than wasting it; and uppers taken higher to get the storage a small kitchen cannot afford to give up. Beyond the lake, Kent is rural and spread out, with larger properties and a different kind of kitchen entirely — more room, straighter walls, and room to run whatever style family you actually like. The lake is the story, but it is not the whole town.
